Two people have died of influenza in Spain so far this year, one with multiple risk factors while the other had none. This follows from the newsletter Surveillance System Influenza in Spain, according to data collected between 28 November and 4 December. Since the beginning of the 2010-2011 influenza season in early October, five cases have been reported serious flu confirmed hospitalized, all men, one in the range of 15-44 years and four in the 45-64 years. Four of them have been confirmed H1N1 virus, and the fifth, AH3N2 influenza virus. All suffered pneumonia and only one patient did not require ICU admission. None of the reported cases were immunized with influenza vaccine this season.
The overall incidence rate of influenza during the study period is 22.71 cases per 100,000, still below the baseline established for the 2010-2011 season, while it exceeded Asturias and Extremadura for the first time this week.
