The influenza virus A (H1N1) has claimed the first two deaths in Spain this year. The dead were two men, 42 and 56 years, residing in Catalonia, who had previous diseases and one of them multiple risk factors. However, neither had been vaccinated against the flu, which has already been built this year immunization against H1N1 variant. Last year 271 people died in Spain from influenza A.
According to the National Epidemiology Center, from the beginning of the season have been reported in Spain five severe flu cases, four of the variant H1N1 and H3N2 fifth. All were males except one required admission to the intensive care unit. As in the previous season, most affected are between 45 and 64 years old.
The most common symptoms presented the most serious were infected with bacterial pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome in one case, multiple organ failure that caused his death.
During the week of November 28 to December 4, the overall incidence rate of influenza in Spain, data from physicians sentry stood at 22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, of whom 53% were for different types variant A. However, last year for the same dates, the number of deaths from the H1N1 pandemic virus had risen to 232.
In Catalonia, on the contrary, the incidence of flu was 10 points higher than the Spanish, reaching 32 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, about normal for this time of year. With respect to influenza A, in the same week analyzed were isolated in Catalonia three cases of H1N1 virus and one influenza C-common-in the samples from the sentinel physician network. Most were of mild flu symptoms in a few days recovery and received regular treatment, the antiviral oseltamivir.
In primary care centers Catalans, a total of 65,850 adult patients controlled during that period, while the children (to 18) totaled 4,428 visits for influenza. The coexistence of different variants of the virus-common with type A, is normal for this time of year and is within the limits prescribed by epidemiological health authorities.
The Department of Health of the Government insists that the target population (elderly, transplant, health workers) are vaccinated. 70% of this group has already been immunized.
