The influenza virus A (H1N1) has claimed the first two deaths this fall in Spain. The dead were two men, 42 and 56 years, residing in Catalonia, who had previous diseases and one of them, multiple risk factors. Despite this, neither had been vaccinated against the flu, which has already been built this year immunization against H1N1 variant.
According to the National Epidemiology Center, from the beginning of the season have been reported in Spain five severe flu cases, four of the variant H1N1 and H3N2 fifth. All were males except one, required admission to an intensive care unit. As in the previous season, most of those affected are between 45 and 64.
The most common symptoms presented were infected with pneumonia, bacterial infection, acute respiratory syndrome in one case, multiple organ failure that caused his death.
During the week of November 28 to December 4, the overall incidence rate of influenza-data from physicians sentry stood at 22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, of which 53% corresponded to variant A. By this time, 2009, Spain had already recorded 232 deaths from influenza A.
