If we add the use of health resources, both in hospitals and health centers (medicines, diagnostic tests, doctor visits ...) and the impact on the workplace, absenteeism basically sick and their caregivers, ¿ how much does a flu? A Spanish research study published in the latest issue of the journal PLoS One has calculated: the epidemic of influenza A (season 2009-2010) was a total expenditure of around 257 million euros.
The authors, of the Research Institute Hospital del Mar de Barcelona (IMIM) and CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health, Madrid, set out to study what use were those affected by swine flu health resources. They also calculated the average cost per patient, both of which required hospitalization and those who do not. Spain accounted for nearly one and a half million outpatient cases of influenza A and about 3,025 hospitalizations. In the first case, the average cost per patient was 940 euros. In the second, 6,236 euros.
"There are hardly any studies on the cost of a flu epidemic. This is an acute and difficult to make these calculations. We wanted to fill that gap in the use of health services, "said Olatz Garin, one of the researchers, who warn that their data do not allow multiplying the average cost per patient by the number of patients for total spending.
"We did a sensitivity analysis, other variables, which ultimately results in a health services cost € 145 million if you count only cases with confirmed diagnosis, and at an estimated cost, including all clinical cases of 257 million euros, "he explains. And precisely this is an estimate with a margin of error. "If in addition to the impact on the health system we had in mind the occupational impact, ie sick leave, the figure would be multiplied by four," Garin calculated.
The impact in the workplace proved to be very high. The temporary disability of workers were on average 30.5 days in hospitalized patients and nine days that followed only outpatient treatment. A very high percentage of the total cost (86%) is attributed to the latter type of patients, while those who ended up in the hospital alone accounted for 14% of the remaining health care spending.
"This study determined the actual use of services due to influenza A, and so far the evaluations were based on models estimated or simulated data," said Jordi Alonso, coordinator of health services research of Imim. "Since swine flu finally not as aggressive as expected, we can say that these results would be similar to those of influenza in an epidemic situation normal," he adds. Garin added that the study shows that "despite initial fears of overuse of health services ultimately this did not happen."
The study was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and has required the collaboration of a broad working group for monitoring of patients with confirmed diagnosis of influenza A. The group has done this research and is preparing a study on the overall cost of the flu, adding these results to other expenses such as prevention campaigns, the purchase of vaccines and loss of productivity beyond the temporary disability.
