A short weekly summary of activity is provided over the summer period. Should activity increase, a fuller report will be published.

More information about the indicators used in this report can be found on the HPA website

Summary for 9 September 2010 (Week 36)
•Influenza activity is very low and stable across the UK.
•In week 35 (ending 5 September), the RCGP weekly influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rate in England was 2.5 per 100,000, in Wales the influenza rate was 2.6 per 100,000, in Northern Ireland the combined influenza and ILI rate was 11.4 per 100,000 and in Scotland the ILI rate increased from 26.1 to 29.8 per 100,000 (figure 1). The QSurveillance ILI rate was 2.2 per 100,000. In all schemes, the rate remains below the baseline level.

•The RCGP consultation rates for acute bronchitis are at low levels. Respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza activity, according to the number of detections reported from HPA/NHS laboratories, remain at low levels.
•No respiratory specimens were reported as collected through the English GP sentinel virological schemes in week 35; none of the four collected in weeks 33 and 34 were positive for influenza; the last pandemic influenza detection through these schemes was in week 16 (ending 25 April) (figure 2).
Figure 2: Weekly number and proportion of specimens collected through GP sentinel virological schemes positive for influenza (England only).

NB. Data for the most recent weeks are subject to change due to reporting lag; proportion positive omitted if fewer than 10 specimens tested in one week.

•Forty-five of 6,379 pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses tested have been confirmed to carry a mutation which confers resistance to the antiviral drug oseltamivir; 15 of the 45 viruses have been tested and confirmed to be phenotypically resistant to the drug but retain sensitivity to zanamivir.
•There has been a small number of hospitalised cases of influenza due to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 reported in recent weeks; several with links to affected areas in the Southern hemisphere and some with underlying risk factors for severe disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 474 deaths reported due to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in the UK; 359 in England, 69 in Scotland, 28 in Wales and 18 in Northern Ireland.
•Outbreaks of acute respiratory disease should be reported to Health Protection Units and to respcdsc@hpa.org.uk.
•The UK pandemic influenza vaccination programme continues for people at high risk of severe disease. For further information see the Department of Health website. For information on the 2010/11 annual influenza immunisation programme see the CMO letter or the Department of Health Green Book.
•In Australia, in the fortnight ending 20 August 2010, most states reported 'regional' or 'widespread' activity. The national ILI consultation rate has had a slight upward trend in recent weeks, but is still below the levels experiences in previous years. The majority of influenza viruses have been pandemic (H1N1) 2009 but some seasonal H3 viruses have been detected. For further information see the Australian health website. In New Zealand, in week 34 the weekly ILI consultation rate remained above the baseline level, but had decreased. The majority of states reported 'local' activity. The majority of influenza viruses have been pandemic (H1N1) 2009. For further information see the New Zealand Public Health Service website. In India, the current epidemic remains regionally intense in the capital and several western and southern states. A number of other states, primarily in western and northern India, reported small numbers of new cases during the third week of August 2010, suggesting that low level circulation of H1N1 2009 may be more geographically extensive. The majority of recent influenza virus isolations have been characterized as H1N1 2009. For further information see the WHO website.
