REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change will bring more poverty, violence and exodus
The impacts of global warming already being experienced worldwide, warns the latest report from the UN
Grow in this century if action is not taken

An increasingly extreme weather

The impacts of global warming are already visible in all continents and in all oceans , warns the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC) , which draws a very bleak future outlook if world leaders do not act on time . Take no action , the text provides that during this century increased the displacement of populations , particularly in coastal areas that will be affected by rising sea levels , flooding and coastal erosion . The report also warns of declining harvests, species extinction and ecosystem degradation . And even pointing to the risk of violent conflict or civil wars occur.
The IPCC , the largest scientific network in the world dedicated to studying climate change , reveals today in Yokohama (Japan) the second of the three parts of his extensive update on the literature of warming, called AR5 . His hundreds of authors , chosen by the United Nations , have had more than double the last time studies ( AR4 is 2007 ) to produce reports that will be key in upcoming international negotiations on climate summits . The Group I report , released last September, concluded that human activity is responsible for climate change . Now the Group II presents review of impacts , vulnerability of territories and adaptation options .

Less glaciers, more droughts. The summary for policy makers that the IPCC has today includes some tables in which the impacts attributable to climate change are listed from the latest assessment report of the experts , called AR4 , 2007. In Europe , scientists are clear that respond to this cause the retreat of Alpine glaciers , Scandinavian and Icelandic or the increase of forests burned in recent decades in Portugal and Greece. Also attributed to climate change early arrival of migratory birds since 1970 , stagnating wheat yields in some countries and the change in the distribution of fish species in European seas .
Coastal erosion. Among future risks highlighted in the report is the coastal erosion , flooding of rivers and larger water restrictions , mainly because of increased evaporation that will occur in southern Africa . The text also warns of extreme heat phenomena that affect the health, productivity and risk of fire.
The effects of global warming is not a future threat and vague , they can already be observed in many regions , says the IPCC in its summary for policy makers : extreme weather events such as heat waves , droughts and cyclones ; less abundant harvests , changes in rainfall affecting access to water ... And the world is " ill-prepared " to deal with future impacts , adds the press release that accompanies it. A text that has been agreeing for this weekend with policymakers and cut some of the provisions contained in a leaked draft last week. These are some of the alerts that launches the report :
Conflict . It is expected that climate change will increase the displacement of populations during the XXI century, especially in developing countries , says the text , adding: " Indirectly, may increase the risk of violent conflict as a civil war between communities amplify instigators well documented factors such as poverty and economic disruption "conflict .
More poverty. The climate-related hazards " directly affecting " the lives of the poorest, because impact their livelihoods , reducing crop in the destruction of their homes and , indirectly , by increasing prices food and food insecurity .
Costas . The expected sea level rise during the twenty-first century will cause flooding and coastal erosion . At the same time, the projections show that the population growth , economic development and increased urbanization will attract more people to coastal areas, so the danger is greater. The report states that the costs of adapting to this reality varies greatly between countries. For some developing countries and small island states to address the impacts and costs of adaptation may involve several percentage points of gross domestic product.
Food security. Global warming , rising sea levels and changes in rainfall affect farmland . And not for good, according to the report . In the case of major crops (wheat , rice and maize) , in tropical and temperate regions , the text speaks of "negative impact " on crops if temperatures rise more than two degrees Celsius and no adaptation measures are taken.
Health . The report notes that the burden of disease caused by climate change is small compared with other consequences and is not well quantified . However, he adds that there is already evidence of increased mortality associated with heat and cold with less in some areas as a result of heating . Changes in temperature and precipitation have already altered the distribution of some waterborne diseases , he adds. Future risks include health problems in coastal areas and small islands due to sea level rise and flooding [RFC 1-5] as well as in large urban populations due to inland flooding . Up to half of the century, the impact will be " the worsening of existing health problems ." In the longer term, but in the century , scientists believe it will worsen health in regions of developing countries.
Oceans . They are already feeling the effects of climate change: more warming (causes displacement of marine species such as Atlantic cod toward polar latitudes) , acidification and oxygen deficiency .
Ecosystems . Some " unique and threatened " already endangered habitats due to climate change . If the average temperature rises one degree increase the risk of "serious consequences." With a rise of two degrees, the risk to many species with limited adaptive capacity will be expanded , especially in coral reefs and Arctic. The alert text that , if nothing is done , the changes in some ecosystems may be " abrupt and irreversible " .
Rural areas. The text warning of the danger that lurks in rural areas due to insufficient access to drinking water and irrigation , and the decline in crop productivity . Farmers and herders in semiarid regions will be most affected in the near future.
Access to water. The report says that renewable resources surface and groundwater " significantly reduced " in most subtropical regions, " intensify the competition for water between sectors."
