The Hong Kong government has announced a temporary ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products, including eggs, in Catalonia (NE Spain) after confirming an outbreak of H7N1 bird flu virus into a community farm autonomously.
The Center for Food Safety (CFS, for its acronym in English) of the Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental announced the measure after the World Health Organization (OIE, for its acronym in English) confirmed an outbreak of low pathogenic H7N1 in poultry on a farm Catalan.
"We have contacted the Spanish authorities on the subject and we will follow closely the information published by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks in the country," a CFS spokesman said in a statement.
In the same possible new measures are announced depending on how the situation develops, with the sole purpose of protecting public and animal health in Hong Kong.
According to the CFS, about 4,600 tons of frozen poultry were imported from Spain for Hong Kong during the year 2012.
According to the website of the poultry The Poultry Site, the outbreak in Catalonia affected broiler breeders and was registered on May 9.
Of the 12,358 birds susceptible to the outbreak, 133 cases were confirmed affected birds that died, and sacrificed the remaining farm.
Although not yet determined the source of the outbreak, the situation has been contained and is not expected to reproduce new growth, notes the specialized web.
Hong Kong has extreme border surveillance and imported poultry products since early last April, to prevent the spread of H7N9 avian flu outbreak (strain unknown until this year) held in China in February and March.
The H7N9 virus was infected 131 people, of which 36 died, although last week was the first since the declaration of the alert in which there have been no new cases.
