Taiwan y la cooperación sanitaria
TZONG Z. HUANG (Oficina Económica y Cultural de Taipei.) - Madrid - 17/05/2010

For many years, Taiwan's participation in international affairs has been severely limited by their exclusion from the UN. However, among the most significant fruits of the policy of "flexible diplomacy" implemented by the new government since 2008, is to be invited for two consecutive years, to participate in the meeting of the Assembly of the World Health as an observer, a development of enormous significance for Taiwan.

That will happen this year at the 63rd Session of the World Health Assembly (WHA), to be held from 17 to 21 May 2010 in Geneva (Switzerland). Of great importance to Taiwan, its presence in the Assembly represents a breakthrough in the mainstream of international health cooperation, directed towards full integration into the global healthcare system.
Taiwan's participation in WHO activities during the past year has led our contribution to the international health network and allowed it to appreciate the high professional level of Taiwan. Unlike past events, communications between Taiwan and WHO have now become smooth and our health experts have been invited to participate in various technical meetings, as has happened with those referring to the novel H1N1 influenza A.
It is hoped that the participation of Taiwan in the WHA is only a first step, and in the future give us the opportunity to engage fully in the international community at all levels.
