The epidemic of Ebola virus that has claimed the lives of 77 people , mainly in Guinea ( 66 ), but also in Liberia ( 6) and Sierra Leone (5), has reached the capital , Conakry , where they have registered four confirmed by laboratory testing and one confirmed case . Ebola arrival to a city of two million inhabitants that has an international airport with connections to other countries in the region has returned to alarm the population of West Africa. Health authorities in the affected countries try to contain the epidemic by isolating the sick with the help of the World Health Organization and organizations such as Doctors Without Borders.
In total, the WHO has already confirmed 103 cases of hemorrhagic fever in Guinea ( 15 officially attributed to the Zaire strain of Ebola virus and many pending study ) , of which 66 affected have died , giving a mortality rate 64%. Five of them were reported Thursday in the capital , Conakry , four of which are confirmed by laboratory tests and the last , the only one of all of them died , pending analysis. Another ten new cases were detected on Thursday , including eight in Macenta Guekedou and two , two of the four districts most affected by this outbreak with Kissidougou and Nzerekore , all in the south. So far , WHO has not established any travel restriction Guinea, said Friday his spokesman Gregory Hartl .
The Guinean health authorities try to deal with this epidemic that was announced a week ago and for the first time has reached a great city. To do this, in coordination with WHO, which has sent a dozen experts in the country , are investigating where they were affected before arriving in the capital and how long incubation has necessitated the virus to cause the first symptoms ( between 2 and 21 days), which are usually a sudden rise in body temperature , severe weakness, pain , especially headache, and sore throat are immediately accompanied by vomiting , diarrhea , skin rashes , and kidney and liver failure. In some cases, the process is complicated by internal and external bleeding and concludes with the death rates of up to 90% . There is no known treatment or vaccine .
Meanwhile, neighboring countries are beginning to seriously worry about. This is the case of Liberia, which has reported eight suspected cases (six of them have died and all had recently been in the Guinean zone Guekedou , the most affected by the disease) and Sierra Leone, with six cases ( five deaths ) . All are in studio to officially confirm if it is Ebola , although it seems that the dreaded virus might be behind these deaths. Both Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal and Guinea Bissau , which share borders with Guinea , have activated their protocols for the early detection of disease to react as quickly as possible , if necessary .

Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) has launched a formal request to the international community to try to contain the spread of Ebola help. " It represents a serious threat to regional security ," said this supranational body in a statement, " We call on the international community to secure their support in managing the epidemic of Ebola virus in the region." And is that a certain psychosis begins to circulate among neighboring countries . This Friday, the Senegalese health authorities have had to leave public opinion to refute a rumor about the appearance of a case of Ebola in Dakar.
However, the most striking adopted decision , for now , Mauritania, who has decided to close two border crossings with Senegal. One of the main concerns lies with the meat of wild animals living in the forests of Guinea, monkeys, rats or bats , which are consumed in many parts of the region , especially in forest areas. Scientists believe that the natural host of the Ebola virus eaters are several species of fruit bats and that they transmitted to humans by eating meat or other animals that have been in contact with them.
According to the WHO , since the first two outbreaks in 1976 were produced , the most deadly Ebola virus epidemic occurred in 2000 in Uganda, with 425 dead. In this country and in the Democratic Republic of Congo recent epidemics were experienced , particularly in 2012 . West Africa had never been the scene of an outbreak, only one case detected in 1994 in Ivory Coast , but the strain Taï Forest, and not from Zaire that is what is currently hitting south of Guinea.
