Outbreak of E.coli O 104:H4 infection

> Outbreaks of E.coli O 104:H4 infection : WHO / Europe gives public health advice (01-07-2011)
Until the investigations into the outbreaks of E.coli O104:H4 infection have been completed, WHO advises consumers in the WHO European Region that bean sprouts or sprouted seeds – whether commercially or home grown – should only be eaten when they have been thoroughly cooked. E. coli bacteria are killed at a cooking temperature of 70 °C.

There is an outbreak of Escherichia coli O104:H4 infection in France, south of Bordeaux, where 8 cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and 8 cases of bloody diarrhoea have been reported. This rare infection is caused by the same serotype, and probably the same strain, as seen in the recent and severe outbreak in Germany, which started in May. The consumption of sprouted seeds and beans has been implicated in both outbreaks. Epidemiological, microbiological and trace-back investigations are continuing, to identify the origin of the contamination responsible for these outbreaks. The European Food Safety Authority has set up a task force – with participation by the European Commission, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, WHO and Member States – to coordinate and advance investigations to track down the primary source of contamination.

News Published on 30/06/2011
Clustered cases of Escherichia coli enterohemorrhagic (EHEC) in the Gironde - Point to June 30, 2011 June 22, two hospitals reported at Bordeaux Aquitaine Wax six cases of bloody diarrhea and 2 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). An epidemiological investigation was immediately implemented in order to identify the source of this episode of clustered cases.
June 30, 8 cases of HUS and eight cases of bloody diarrhea have been identified since June 22
Of these 16 cases of HUS or bloody diarrhea, 11 participated in a June 8 Open House Leisure Centre in Early Childhood (CLPE) in Bordeaux,. These 11 people are 7 women and 4 men aged 31 to 64. Ten of them reported having eaten sprouts during the day. To a person, information on the consumption of sprouted seeds is not available at this time. These 11 people began their symptoms between 15 and on 20/06.
Infection with EHEC O104: H4 was confirmed for six patients with HUS. The microbiological diagnosis of other cases is pending. Strains of E. coli O104: H4 isolated from three patients were compared by molecular typing, by the CNR and the laboratory E. coli associated with strains isolated from patients linked to the epidemic of infections due to EHEC sprouted seeds occurred in Germany in May and June 2011. This comparison showed that the strains isolated from French patients were indistinguishable between them and the strains isolated from patients in Germany. This suggests that these two events are related to a common source.
A cohort study of all persons who attended the open house began June 29 to document this episode of epidemiologically and clinically.
A survey of traceability is underway to determine the origin of seeds (mustard, fenugreek or rocket) consumed during the open house. Samples of seeds for sprouting are being microbiological analysis.
Given the results of epidemiological surveys, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) and the Directorate General for Health (DGS) recommend, as a preventive, not eat sprouts floods. Only the high temperature cooking can kill bacteria such as E. Coli O104: H4. In addition, the DGS and the DGCCRF recommended to clean after use utensils used for the germination of seeds or food preparation and always wash hands after handling seeds.
An assessment of risk associated with clustered cases of EHEC infection in Bordeaux was released on 29/06 at the sites of the EFSA and ECDC (http://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications / Publications/2011June29_RA_JOINT_EFSA_STEC_France.pdf)
This episode has no connection with clustered cases of E Coli O157 infections occurred in June in the North and linked to the consumption of a lot of burgers brand "Country Steaks" distributed by Lidl's stores .
