South Korea detected the reappearance of a strain of bird flu
The pathogen has affected a farm ducks but no human cases
The Country Madrid 20 ENE 2014 - 12:36 CET
The South Korean authorities have notified the reoccurrence of another avian flu : the H5N8 . The pathogen was detected at a duck farm in Jeollabuk Do Province , southwest of the country. 10 animals became ill and died in July , according to the International Organization for Animal Health ( OIE). Still, he had to sacrifice the rest of the farm animals ( 21,163 ) . No cases in humans.
The warning of the new outbreak is important for livestock because, as with H5N1 , the virus is very dangerous for birds. Moreover, since 2010 this variant of influenza is identified . The pathogen is classified by the OIE as " highly pathogenic " but for animals, not for people . It has also been detected in migratory ducks.
The resemblance to the H5N1 seems to indicate that there will be cases in humans, or that they will be very few , but still have to watch themselves . That virus that began circulating in 2003 , was the first in the list of microorganisms that have emerged in the past decade (van 648 reported cases and 348 deaths) , all of them, so far, without being a serious risk to population . That does not mean you have to be aware not to see if they become a danger to humans, as is being done with the H1N1 (so-called swine flu ) or H7N9 , which is very active in Southeast Asia .
