Flu surveillance system in Belgium

Each year, a flu epidemic occurs and three or four times a century emerges a new Influenza virus. The type of the virus which is circulating and the vulnerability of the population determine the severity of the epidemic or pandemic.

Therefore is the flu surveillance a process to repeat yearly. In Belgium, the Scientific Institute of Public Health (IPH) manages the dedicated surveillance systems, under the financing and responsibility of the French Community, the Flemish Agency for Care and Health of the Flemish Community, and the Brussels Common Community Commission.

The objectives of the flu surveillance are:

1. To describe the epidemic in time (= to design the epidemic curve) and in age groups;
2. To identify the viruses circulating and their main characteristics
3. To evaluate the severity and impact of the epidemic in the population.
